The final day of the FutureSmart Scholars’ General Assembly was more than the culmination of a meaningful gathering, it was an opportunity for our scholars to turn learning into action.
As part of their General Assembly experience, FutureSmart scholars spent a day volunteering at the National Resource and Logistics Management Bureau of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Working alongside DSWD volunteers, they helped prepare family food packs that were dedicated to communities heavily affected by the southwest monsoon (Habagat) across different regions of the country.
The scholars played an important role in supporting the goal of preparing 15,000 food packs each day, helping ensure that essential supplies could reach families affected by the widespread rains and flooding.
For the scholars, the experience offered a firsthand look at the impact that collective effort can create. Beyond their academic journey, they became active participants in an initiative that provides much-needed support to Filipino families during challenging times.
“Volunteering made me realize that even the smallest tasks can make a difference when we do them together. As a FutureSmart scholar, I’m grateful for the opportunity to give back and be part of something that helps families affected by the Habagat rains. It reminded me that education is not only about achieving our own dreams, but also about using what we have to help others,” shared Ayesha, one of the FutureSmart scholars.
For DigiPlus Foundation, creating opportunities for young people to participate in meaningful community work is an important part of developing future leaders.
“Programs like FutureSmart are not just about providing scholars with opportunities to pursue their education. We also want to nurture a sense of purpose, empathy, and responsibility toward the communities around them. When our scholars volunteer, they experience firsthand how their time, energy, and talents can contribute to something bigger than themselves,” said Neil Orillaneda, Senior Program Manager of DigiPlus Foundation.
Through FutureSmart, scholars are empowered not only to pursue their aspirations but also to become changemakers who understand the value of giving back. Their day at DSWD demonstrated that bayanihan can take many forms, from lending a helping hand to preparing food packs, to simply showing up for communities that need support.
As the FutureSmart Scholars’ General Assembly ended, the scholars carried home more than memories and lessons. They left with a deeper understanding that every helping hand counts, and that when we come together, we can Multiply the Good and create a lasting impact.
